The contest, held annually to increase the rank of awareness on the sea and fresh water, has collected over 5,500 votes, of which almost 1,300 went to Blobfish, informs the BBC.
This gelatinous fish, which lives at great depths off the coasts of Australia, became famous in 2013 when the Ugly Animal Preservation Society was designated.
Although it is often considered unsightly, in its natural environment it looks different, due to the pressure of the water that maintains its shape. When brought to the surface, his soft body loses his structure and acquires the appearance that brought him fame.
In the second place was Orange Roughy, a deep -recognized deep fish for his mucous channels. Although he seemed a favorite, Blobfish received a surprising impulse after two radio presenters, Sarah Gandy and Paul Flynn, launched a campaign to urges the public to vote.
“It was harassed all my life and we thought: Arrive! It’s time to shine! And what glorious moment is this! ” the two said.

Blobfish feeds on molluscs, crabs, lobsters and sea hedgehogs, and unlike other fish, has no skeleton or scales, but a soft and flaccid skin.
Nine of the ten finalists of the competition are considered vulnerable species, including Blobfish, which is affected by industrial fishing.
New Zealand also organizes a similar competition for birds, where, last year, the title of the year’s bird was won by Hoiho, a rare penguin.
