British band Coldplay's concern for the environment: how it reduced carbon emissions during concerts by more than 50%

Two years later, in 2021, Coldplay announced a 12-point plan to reduce the carbon footprint of touring by 50%.

The band announced that during “Music of the Spheres” they managed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 59%, compared to the previous tour, entitled “A Head Full of Dreams” (2016-2017). What's more, seven million trees were planted, according to coldplay.com.

These figures were verified by the MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative. We want to say a big thank you to our incredible tour family and all the brilliant people who made this possible“, the members of Coldplay sent.

Coldplay has managed to reduce carbon emissions through various methods: using a dance floor that generates electricity from fans dancing at concerts, bicycles that charge as you pedal, solar panels.

The energy produced by the solar panels, dance stages and electric bicycles increased from 15 KwH to 17KwH in each concert of the tour.

“Stages are constructed from a combination of lightweight materials”

The band claims that “72% of all waste from the tournament was diverted from landfills and sent for reuse, recycling and composting”up from 66% in 2023. Eighteen shows were supported entirely by a system made from recycled BMW I3 batteries.

The stages are constructed from a combination of lightweight, low-carbon and reusable materials, including recycled steel, which can be reused or recycled appropriately at the end of the tour.

The reusable LED wristbands worn by the audience during the show are made from 100% compostable, plant-based materials.

We have reduced the production of wristbands by 80% by collecting, sterilizing and recharging them after each show.

The show has been upgraded with ultra-efficient equipment such as energy-efficient LED screens, laser and lighting systems and a sound system with up to 50% less energy consumption than the previous tour , which dramatically reduces ambient noise outside the venues.

We've partnered with SAP to develop a free tour app that encourages fans to use low-carbon transport to get to and from shows“, it is also shown on the band's website.

In addition to caring for the environment, Coldplay put 10% of their tours and recordings into a fund for good causes. Funds are split between projects and charities with social and environmental concerns, including ClientEarth, The Ocean Cleanup and One Tree Planted, according to the band's official website.

Concert in Bucharest

The rock band Coldplay came to Romania for the first time, where they will hold their second concert on Thursday, June 13, as part of the “Music Of The Spheres” Tour, a tour to promote the album of the same name, released by the band in 2021.

The Coldplay concerts generated extraordinary interest, being sold-out in a short time, thus setting a new record for live music shows in Romania.

The first show of the British band, which took place on Wednesday, June 12, at the National Arena in the Capital, was not without incidents.

Before performing in Romania, Chris Martin confessed that he looked for local artists and that he found many that he appreciates. A manele singer, Babasha, a trending new generation artist, also took to the stage.
