American singer Britney Spears was arrested in California on Wednesday night, according to US court documents cited by the BBC. The artist was detained by the Highways Police around 21:30 local time (05:30 GMT), but was released in the early hours of Thursday morning. She is due to appear in court on May 4.
Court documents do not clearly state the reason for the arrest. The case is pending in Ventura County Superior Court.
A representative of the artist commented on the incident to BBC News, saying that the situation was serious and that the artist would take steps to change her personal situation.
“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney will take the necessary steps and abide by the law, and hopefully this will be the first step ina long overdue change that needs to happen in Britney’s life. We hope he gets the help and support he needs during this difficult time. Her boys will spend time with her. Her loved ones will come up with a long-awaited plan to help her succeed and feel good.”

Shortly after the news of the arrest appeared, the star’s Instagram account was deleted.
According to the publication TMZ, the artist would have been detained after allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. After being handcuffed, the singer was reportedly taken to a hospital for a breathalyzer test.
