Actor George Burcea officially announced his candidacy for mayor of Bucharest from the Party of Young People (POT), on October 30, 2025, in a video posted on social media directly from New York.

Burcea stated that she chose to leave behind the “beauty of New York” to return to Bucharest, where she was born and raised. “Romania was ruled by the same parties for 35 years, and the results can be seen in every corner of this city. It’s time for Bucharest to have a leadership that works for the people. (…) I am running alongside the Young People’s Party, a team that believes that Romania must be freed and that real change starts with the young generation”the actor added.
The head of POT, Ana Maria Gavrilă, motivated the party’s decision by emphasizing that Bucharest needs a mayor who can free the capital from the political games of the governing parties.
Connections with the political world
George Burcea is a controversial character, but with public notoriety. He is not a member of the POT and has no experience in administration or politics, and the party’s decision to go with its own candidate and not support a joint candidate of the sovereignist front generated mixed reactions among the party’s supporters.
On the POT leader’s Facebook page, to a post from the signature collection campaign, most followers’ reactions were critical, with many accusing betrayals and the division of the sovereignist front.
On the other hand, AUR nominated Anca Alexandrescu, who received public approval in the post made by George Simion.

George Burcea graduated from UNATC and acted in Romanian and international productions, including “Closer to the Moon”, “Singh Is Bliing”, “Raaz Reboot” and the hit series “Wednesday”, where he played the role of Lurch, the butler of the Addams family.
