Several high schools in Slatina were equipped with cardiac defibrillators the other day. The devices arrived at the Sports High School, at the “Radu Greceanu” College and at the “Ion Minulescu” College, whose director is the coordinator of the junior Olympic team in Mathematics, Marius Perianu.

“There are around 1,850 students studying in our school, but altogether we are about 2,000 people here, if we also take into account the teachers and auxiliary staff. Therefore, such a life-saving device is more than welcome,” director Marius Perianu told Adevărul.
The devices were purchased through a partnership concluded between the County Inspectorate for Emergency Situations and the Life Support Olteni Rescue Association with funding from the town hall. It is, more precisely, about four such devices. Three of them were installed a few days ago at the Sports High School, at the Ion Minulescu College and the Radu Greceanu College. The fourth will be located at Nicolae Titulescu High School. The value of the project is approximately 40,000 lei.

“This device should be installed in all state institutions, not only in schools. Thank God, since I have been a teacher here, at “Ion Minulescu”, and I have 27 years of seniority in this high school, there has never been an event that required such an intervention. But you never know what will happen. Unforeseen situations can arise and then you really have the opportunity to provide first aid until the ambulance arrives”continues the teacher. “Unforeseen situations can arise at any time, and this device helps us to intervene quickly. Because in critical situations every second counts. It is good to have a device with which to intervene as quickly as possible. And we have to be ready”he also told us.
The defibrillator was installed in the school the other day and all employees, teachers and auxiliary staff, were trained how to use it correctly and safely. “It was handed over to us on Tuesday and we learned how to use it on Tuesday as well. Everyone witnessed.”
How to use the device. The teachers participated in training sessions
The device is located in the boarding school. “Nwe have many children staying in the boarding school. We couldn’t install the device in the school because in the case of ladies, if something happens during the night, the school is closed. Until someone comes to open it, take the device and return with it to the boarding school… precious time would be lost”. The device is mobile, easy to handle, with very clear instructions for use. “However, we wish never to use it. But, in the case of ladies forbid… we can save a life”
We asked the manager to tell us the steps to take in case of an emergency, as they were trained to do. “First of all, checks must be made: if the person who needs help is breathing, if he has a pulse. Classical resuscitation is then attempted, cardiac massage. If this procedure is not sufficient, a defibrillator can be used.”
Only school employees were trained. Students don’t. Instead, the children organize other first aid activities. “They among themselves. At their initiative. We have many students who volunteer and organize different events in the school. Even on Tuesday we have an action of this kind, in which more students will teach their colleagues how to give first aid”.
The principal takes pride in the school and its students. And he has reasons too. “We are the biggest school in the county, with the most students, with the best results. Last school year I had over 98% passing in the National Assessment and 99.5% success in the Baccalaureate. We are a school that invests in children and in the community, and the community, in turn, invests in us.”
Professor Perianu also told us that this action of the County Inspectorate for Emergency Situations and the Association Salvatori Olteni Sprijin pentru Viață could make the children even more responsible. “We’re going to teach high school students how to use it, even though we’ll be the ones responding in an emergency. But it doesn’t hurt the students to know how to maneuver and under what conditions. Maybe they’ll ever have the chance to save a life. They can encounter various situations and then they will know how to proceed”.
The defibrillators have also arrived in the schools of Făgăraș
And at the “Radu Greceanu” National College in Slatina, a cardiac defibrillator was placed. The representatives of the school stated for Adevărul that the device was installed a few days ago, and the teachers and auxiliary staff attended a training course. “The people at ISU taught us how to use it in case of cardiorespiratory arrest. We have several buildings in the same yard. The device was mounted on a wall, in a hallway, in plain view, in the central body. Below it is a poster with instructions for use. The device is in a box. When needed, it detaches and you can go with it where you need to intervene. It’s a mobile device.”
The school representatives explained that emergency intervention must follow a certain protocol. “Do not intervene at first with the defibrillator. There are some steps to follow that I learned in the training. But we hope that we will never need to use this device”.
At the beginning of September, several high schools in the city of Făgăraş were also equipped with such devices. And defibrillators are also found in the premises of several schools in Bucharest.
