Ciolacu, on Romanian Police Day: Act with maximum seriousness in combating drug trafficking

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said, on Monday, on the occasion of the Romanian Police Day, that our country is exposed to international criminal circuits, and law enforcement officers must anticipate and combat any new challenge. The Prime Minister asked the police to act with maximum seriousness and severity in the fight against drug trafficking, especially when the traffickers target minors.

I would also like to note the fact that, along with the technological advance and the democratization of access to information, crimes are evolving and diversifying. Romania is an open country, and that makes us exposed to international criminal circuits. New challenges are emerging, which the Romanian Police must anticipate and combat. Police officers must constantly adapt their methods and follow training courses to combat the increasingly sophisticated means of criminals. And here I give you a short example: drug trafficking. For a long time, when our country had closed borders, we were safe from this scourge. Later, we became a transit country, and in recent years we have started to become more and more a destination country for drug traffickers. It is a relatively new situation, and the Police must adapt and develop their capacities to deal with this phenomenon. I ask you to act with maximum seriousness and severity in combating drug trafficking. Especially when the target of traffickers are minors“, is Ciolacu's message on the occasion of the Romanian Police Day, read by Alexandru – Mihai Ghigiu, the head of the prime minister's chancellery, during an event held at the Military Circle.

The prime minister claims that Romania is a safe country, with a low level of crime compared to other Western countries, where acts of violence are recorded in schools or on the street, resulting in casualties, acts of vandalism in shops or on the subway, according to Agerpres.

Recently, thanks to the globalization of information, we see shocking images in the news magazines from countries that we say are more developed than Romania. Acts of violence in schools or on the street, resulting in casualties, acts of vandalism in shops or on the subway are a picture that gives us the feeling of fear or insecurity. But in Romania it is not like that. And this is said especially by Romanians who return home, after living abroad for a while. They note that Romania is better in this regard compared to many Western states. This does not mean that in Romania there are no crimes or that there are no acts of violence. But their frequency and severity is lower than in other parts. Mistakes were made with us too. We have to admit that either it intervened late, or various errors were made, which were heavily publicized by the mass media. But no one is perfect. Beyond these shortcomings, Romania is a country with low crime, Romania is a safe country. And this is thanks to the Romanian Police, who deserve, both today and every day, our congratulations and gratitude“, Ciolacu declares.
