In a photo taken in Washington, Nicolae Ciucă appears right behind presidents Joe Biden and Volodimir Zelenski.

“Some politicians in Romania think that politics can be done through posts on Facebook and noise on TV, but diplomacy, especially military diplomacy, works on very different bases. A NATO summit, especially if hosted by the US, is an ideal place to meet representatives of all our key military allies and to support the national interest in greater security for us and for the entire eastern flank of NATO. And the best people to do this are those with expertise, experience and a wide range of contacts. (…)And I’m doing it to serve my country, just like I did in all the years I spent in the armed forces”, Nicolae Ciucă wrote on Facebook.

The situation in Ukraine, discussed at the NATO Summit

Ukraine’s accession path to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is now “irreversible”,
members of the Washington bloc said this week, according to the nytimes.

But even as NATO leaders made the bold statement in a statement, many Ukrainian officials and analysts said promises without action were insufficient and that the summit did little to fundamentally change the course of the war.

The public show of solidarity was welcome, they said, but would do little to address the deep uncertainties facing both Ukraine and the Western alliance.

“There will be many opinions, assessments and comments about the NATO summit in Washington”, Valeri Chali, former Ukrainian ambassador to the United States and director of the Ukraine Crisis Media Center, wrote in a statement.

While Ukrainian officials expressed deep gratitude for the renewed pledges of military support and hope that some of the security agreements announced at the summit would help shape future peace negotiations, many said the failure to formally invite Ukraine to join NATO has been emblematic of a deeper Western indecision about its response to President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of the country.

“If we want to win, if we want to win, if we want to save our country and defend it,” then restrictions must be lifted, President Zelenskiy said at a press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

Stoltenberg reiterated his support for Ukraine to strike targets inside Russia, saying this was in line with international law and would not make NATO part of the conflict.
