Connection between the growth of extremism and state failures. “People believe that the unsolved files were blocked so that no one would pay”

With the death of former President Ion Iliescu, the public attention came back by the files not resolved by the Romanian justice, such as “Revolution”, “Mining” or “August 10”. The situation generates mistrust in the political class, a context in which the land for extremist parties is paved, attract the attention of the specialists.

The potential of radical populism in 2028 can reach 60%, warns the director of INScop, the sociologist Remus Stefureac, stressing that this is posbly in the absence of a real alternative in Romanian politics.

“About a month ago, it was big, great upset around a percentage. And in the end, I rightly. I agree that 13% is a very small percentage. In addition, it also brings bad luck. 30%. announces sociologist Remus Ștefureac on his Facebook page.

In this situation, the big parties must understand that “There is still a majority of the population who does not want radical populism, but which will not hesitate to sanction harshly the lack of courage, vision and change ” of the Romanian state. The 13% percentage to which the sociologist refers is that of the PSD in a recent insc poll. The political formation with the largest party apparatus in the back and the numerous parliamentarians is in free fall after losing the presidential elections in the spring and those annulled in the winter of last year.

The data come against the background of a collective nostalgia increasingly pronounced compared to the regime before 1989 (48.4% of those questioned are of the opinion that it was better before 1989, compared to the present situation. The Parliament, the Government, the Presidency or the City Hall are among the last indicated as a level of confidence in another Inscop study on trust in the state institutions. The percentage of those who indicate that there was more public safety before 1989 is crushing, 75.1% compared to 12.1%.

The editor-in-chief Historia Ion M. Ioniță explains for “Adevărul” that the failures of the state in solving the great files and the conviction of the culprits, from the file of the revolution or that of the mining and to the more recent events that have shaken the public opinion, the collective files or “August 10”, “All these have planted a lot of distrust and created a space conducive to the development of conspiracy theories, to increase the dissatisfaction of the population. And these combined things lead to extremist parties. ”

In all this context, in the middle of a lack of confidence and dissatisfaction of the population, “The scene is prepared for the extremist discourse that promises the sea with salt, obviously without any basis, because the recovery of the Romanian situation can be done only through reforms. (…) Only you have to do the courage to do these reforms and the lack of this political will, they will not be implemented, people will not see results and then they will be more tempted to vote on extremist parties. “

The editor-in-chief Historia claims that the foundation stone is the case of the revolution: “From here he started a lot of distrust, even starting from the file with the Romanian Revolution, that from there everything starts, from there starts everything that happened in Romania. It did not happen only bad. There are also extraordinary progress. Obviously, things changed a lot after the 2000s, especially. And that is seen. But people are especially attentive to what is not going on. (…) Negative perceptions are stronger than positive news. (…)

The files were for decades, turned, was the mining file. (…) Now were the other files, August 10, they all saw what happened then, they saw the violence, but they saw no advance, although it was promised that the light will be done there, it will be explained what happened. So all this contributed a lot to the distrust of society in their own systems, especially in terms of politics and justice. ”

“Simply speaking, people believe that all these files have been blocked so that no one would pay. And then, of course they become more sensitive to extremist speeches. People consider them two categories of citizens, those in high functions that benefit from protection and the others who do not. And their anger breaks on the systems, not for their systems, but not for the extension, not for their systems.shows Ion M. Ioniță.

The delays files

Justice still debates major events in the recent history of Romania, such as the 1989 Revolution or Mining of June 1991. In the file “August”, regarding the brutal intervention of the Gendarmerie to the 2018 protests, the facts are prescribed in 2026, the case being far from ending.
