Covid-19 remains “a major threat that is no longer talked about.” What precautionary measures could be taken at the beginning of the school year

As the students are going to return to the classrooms, the danger Covid-19 remains present, even if, officially, Romania seems to ignore the epidemic. Doctor Octavian Jurma points out that the pandemia has not disappeared and continues to represent a major risk, especially for vulnerable people.

According to the official data reported monthly, the cases of Covid-19 in Romania have grown steep this summer. In July 2025, 1,703 new cases and 7 deaths were registered, signaling an epidemic wave similar to last summer.

In view of the reporting gap (currently the data is published monthly, not weekly), the authorities cannot take preventive measures on time, leaving the exposed population.

Covid-19, the disease that can no longer be called

Specialist Octavian Jurma points out that the pandemic, although almost invisible in the public discourse, has not disappeared. In Romania, Covid-19 became official “The disease that cannot be called” and, next to measles, “The disease that can no longer be reported.”

Starting with July 2025, the data on new cases and deaths are reported only monthly, which seriously limits the ability of the authorities to react in time.

“It is incredible how, in 2025, we find out about the epidemic waves only after they have passed, as if we received all the warnings one month after a disaster has taken place.”explains Jurma.

According to the specialist, this delay causes all preventive public health measures to become almost useless: we can no longer warn the population, we can no longer prepare hospitals and we can no longer protect vulnerable people at the right time.

“Although it debuts epidemic waves in the summer months, similar to last summer, Romania remains completely orbital. We do not know what happened last week and before it. All the forecasts are based on partial data and reported late.”he adds.

Jurma points out that this mode of reporting, monthly and not weekly, has concrete effects on public health.

“In the case of an epidemic peak, we will find out about it only after the tip has passed. So we have no chance to take preventive measures or to warn people at risk. Practically, the authorities oblige us to live with the virus without any warning and without any effective protection.”said the epidemiologist.

The specialist in public health also emphasizes that, although in the rest of the world Covid-19 continues to be rigorously monitored and measures are taken to protect the population, in Romania the disease has become an almost taboo subject, and the lack of access to the vaccine and to precise information creates an extremely risky situation for citizens.

“We not only do not protect the vulnerable in hospitals with non-pharmaceutical measures, but we do not allow them to protect themselves by vaccination. It is a criminal abuse that deliberately endangers.”concludes the jurma.

Recent data and forecasts

The analysis of the specialist shows that Romania is facing an epidemic wave similar to last summer. In July 2025, 1,703 new cases of Covid-19 were reported, 232% more than in the previous month, and 7 deaths only in that month, totaling 31 deaths from the beginning of the year.

“The reported monthly values are close to the corresponding weekly peaks of 2024. It is very likely that in August there will be an increase of at least 300% of the number of new cases and of the deaths.”warns the jur.

The expert emphasizes that, in the absence of vaccination and proper treatment, Covid-19 remains much more dangerous than influenza, which kills on average only 100 people per season.

Prevention measures at the beginning of the school year

Children and the elderly are in the forefront of concerns, as they are part of the vulnerable categories. Recently, pediatric doctors have drawn an alarm about the little ones, especially if they are facing the disease for the first time in life.

In the absence of an available vaccine and official measures, students and teaching staff can take individual measures to protect themselves.

Wearing the mask in the classrooms and the busy means of transport could be a solution. Respect for the hygiene of the hands and the constant ventilation of the rooms become essential.

Avoiding crowds, maintaining physical distance and careful monitoring of symptoms are other methods of protection, to which is added the prompt consultation of the doctor in case of suspicion of infection.

Although the specialists claim that the new stem does not have the severity of the previous forms, in an analysis the truth, they have reminded the importance of prevention measures.

Let’s avoid crowded and closed spaces, as much as we can stay out, outdoors. Let’s wear the mask if we visit the vulnerable ones and to isolate ourselves as much as possible if we have cold signs. If we can work from home it is better for us and for those around us ”recommends Tatiana Dejoianu.

The pediatrician, Mihai Craiu, completes the list of recommendations, in the case of children:

He must take care of the hands and surfaces with which the children come into contact with. There are all kinds of small things that we forgot from the pandemic: we do not wash our hands anymore, we do not stay at some distance from someone who is sneezing or coughing and turning the viruses. “.

In addition, Jurma recommends vaccination in another country, where the vaccine is available, which is, in his opinion, more efficient method of protection.
