Romania will take over the position of commander of the EUFOR Althea operation, in the theater of operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, starting from January 2025, the Presidential Administration announced, after Thursday’s meeting of the Supreme National Defense Council (CSAT).

According to a press release sent by the Presidential Administration, during Thursday’s CSAT meeting, Council members analyzed and approved the Romanian armed forces that can be made available to participate in missions and operations outside the territory of the Romanian state in 2025.

Our country will take over the position of commander of the EUFOR Althea operation, in the theater of operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, starting from January 2025, for a period of 12 months“, states the cited source.

The Supreme Council of National Defense met on Thursday, at 1:00 p.m., in a meeting at the Cotroceni Palace, with the topic of the missions and operations of the Romanian armed forces abroad also on the agenda.

The EUFOR ALTHEA operation of the European Union in Bosnia and Herzegovina was launched in December 2004, based on the mandate of the UN Security Council. The mission succeeds the SFOR and IFOR operations, carried out under NATO command. Since 2012, EUFOR ALTHEA has focused on training and strengthening the capacity of the armed forces of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
