The interim Minister of the Environment, Diana Buzoianu, warned on Monday evening that Sunday’s estimate according to which the Cernavădă Power Plant can operate nine days after the works to increase the flow of the Danube is no longer valid.
“Yes, the estimate is revised, because, in the face of extreme phenomena, we can give solutions, but when we are talking about 60 km of water to travel, obviously new obstacles can also appear, because this is what happened in the case of the Danube these days”Diana Buzoianu explained to Euronews,
According to her, by lowering the four barges, by destroying the rock, we managed to raise the water level by 8 cm on the first day.
“But that water, carrying alluvium, creating certain currents that we could no longer manage or analyze (…) an obstacle was created, a damb, which practically reoriented the flow of water, the water that had been displaced and thus the water no longer reached the channel directly where it should have for Cernavodă. Thus, today we are in a much more gloomy prognosis than we were yesterday”stated the interim Minister of the Environment.
Asked how long Unit 2 from Cernavădă can continue to function, Buzoianu stated: “It also depends a lot on the dredging works (…) So it is almost impossible to manage. We did our best, if you remember last week the communique was that it is possible that Unit 2 will be stopped from last Thursday. We managed to gain so many days through the works that were done. Every day gained is an extra day, but, I repeat, (…) we are in a more pessimistic scenario than two days ago”.
We remind you that the flow of the Danube at the entrance to Romania, in the Baziaș section, is approximately 1,400 cubic meters per second, a value that Romanian Waters indicates as a new historical minimum. According to the data of the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management, the flow is estimated to remain around this value until August 17.
According to the report on the phenomenon of hydrological drought sent by Romanian Waters on August 10, the first stage of restrictions applies to the Cernavodă nuclear power plant. The document states that the level registered at the Cernavodă hydrometric station is -2.27 meters and that there are 0.25 meters left until the second stage of restrictions is applied.
