Dr. Cătălin Cîrstoveanu, head of the Newborn ATI Department at the “Marie Curie” Children’s Emergency Clinical Hospital in Bucharest, draws attention to the chronic shortage of places and medical staff, stating that almost 150 babies have died in the last six years without being able to benefit from specialized treatment in the medical unit.
In an interview given to the Cotidianul publication, doctor Cătălin Cîrstoveanu explained that the lack of medical assistants forced him to reduce the number of beds in the ward from 27 to 22, given that at least ten more medical personnel would be needed.
Application for real-time monitoring of available seats
To eliminate suspicions regarding the availability of beds in ATI, the team from “Marie Curie” developed an application six years ago that displays in real time the number of free places and requests from the country.
“We did it because nobody thought we didn’t have beds. Some parents sued us because we couldn’t take the kids“, declared Cîrstoveanu.
According to him, the platform is publicly accessible and can be consulted by anyone, from representatives of the Ministry of Health to patients’ families.
“Nearly 150 children never got the right treatment”
The doctor claims that the data collected through the application highlighted the extent of the problem.
“I’m not saying they all would have survived. But I’m saying that almost 150 children on the waiting list never got the right treatment. We don’t know how many of them would have lived, but we know they didn’t have the chance“, he said.
“For me, as a country, it means a tragedy”
Cîrstoveanu believes that the situation represents a major failure of the medical system and compares the current reality with one of the most difficult periods in the history of obstetrics and neonatology in Romania.
“For me, as a country, it means a tragedy. It means that we are perpetuating the times of Ceaușescu, when there were maternity hospitals where five children died a day“, said the doctor.
