Dr. Mihai Craiu, pediatrician: “Romanian children receive vaccines less often than in the EU, but plenty of antibiotics”

Doctor Mihai Craiu, one of the most respected pediatricians in Romania, notes with concern that, in our country, children receive vaccines less often than other children in the EU, but “benefit” from impressive amounts of antibiotics, prescribed without solid evidence or completely erroneous.

“After a typical guard in the days around the holidays I'm thinking how much we've all failed in prevention strategies… Maybe I'm just tired after a sleepless night?!? I am specifically referring to the strategies aimed at preventing acute infections in children, in the last three decades”writes Dr. Mihai Craiu, primary pediatrician at the “Alessandrescu-Rusescu” Mother and Child Health Institute in Bucharest, on his Virtual Children's Hospital Facebook page.

According to the renowned pediatrician, almost all serious cases, hospitalized during the guard of May 7, 2024, were generated by pathogens that produce infections preventable by vaccination or by other specific means. “It seems that in Romania almost no one learns anything even ..“, says the doctor.

“A simple analysis of the situation in the pediatric departments of the university clinics of our country shows that the acute febrile illnesses of hospitalized children are caused by rotavirus, pneumococcus, Haemophillus influenzae, Bodetella or VSR (respiratory syncytial virus). Romanian children receive vaccines less often than other children in the EU, but from impressive amounts of antibiotics, prescribed without solid evidence or completely erroneously. And end up in the hospital (or die in 2024) from diseases that frequently killed children in their grandparents' or great-grandparents' generation”explains Dr. Mihai Craiu.

There would be solutions, the doctor claims. “If only they would understand that it is an effective vaccination campaign (say for rotavirus) than the current impressive costs of hospitalizing these severely dehydrated infants. That's not to mention those who lose the battle”concludes Dr. Mihai Craiu.
