Eating foods rich in potassium can keep heart disease at bay

Daily consumption of bananas can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack and stroke, due to the high content of potassium that helps lower blood pressure.

Although often asymptomatic, high blood pressure can have devastating health consequences. This condition, which affects a third of the British population, increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks and strokes. However, according to experts, many people are unaware that they are living with the condition.

A study published in the European Heart Journal of nearly 25,000 Britons found that participants who regularly consumed potassium-rich foods were 13% less likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke.

Bananas are high in potassium, which means this healthy fruit can help lower blood pressure, thereby reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke. 100 grams of banana contain about 358 mg of potassium. Bananas are an excellent source of potassium, but they are not the only ones. A varied and balanced diet should also include other foods rich in this essential mineral for health, such as: apricots, salmon, beans, avocados and tuna.

According to the British Heart Foundation, the risk of cardiovascular disease increases significantly in the presence of certain factors, such as age over 65 or a family history of high blood pressure. Also, unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, an unbalanced diet (rich in salt, low in fruits and vegetables) and being sedentary, contribute substantially to the appearance of these conditions. In addition, obesity, especially in the abdomen, is a major risk factor.
