Presidential adviser Eugen Tomac claims that the responsibility for the formation of a new government no longer belongs exclusively to President Nicușor Dan, after two prime ministerial proposals have already been rejected by the political parties. The former prime minister-designate says that “parties need to be much more flexible.”
Eugen Tomac stated on Friday, on the B1 TV station, that the head of state did his duty by trying to find solutions to overcome the political deadlock, but the unblocking of the situation now depends on the ability of the political formations to build a majority.
“The president made two proposals. On June 4, on June 14. They did not convince the political parties. Therefore, the seat of the problem is no longer only at the Presidential Administration”said Tomac.
According to the presidential adviser, Nicușor Dan continues consultations with political leaders:
“As soon as a majority is formed that can unlock this process, obviously the president will appoint a person to form the Government.”
According to him, although there are already proposals from the parties, none currently enjoys a clear majority in Parliament. In these conditions, “parties must be much more flexible” to allow the formation of a viable government formula.
The presidential adviser also stated that Nicușor Dan is in permanent contact with political leaders and that his objective is to quickly find a solution to avoid prolonging the crisis.
Eugen Tomac rejected the idea that the head of state could be forced to take a certain decision, stating that the president is “a responsible, rational statesman”concerned with the formation of a stable government and the exit from the current political deadlock.
Tomac says his proposed formula was “the most appropriate”
Eugen Tomac claims that the version of government that he tried to build would have been the best solution for getting out of the crisis.
“It would have been the most appropriate formula to unlock the political crisis we are going through“, said Tomac, specifying that he treated the designation as “a obligation towards the Romanian citizens and towards the country” and that he tried to form a team of specialists to manage the political and economic situation.
Why he gave up the mandate of prime minister
Tomac explained that he decided not to request the investiture vote in the Parliament after finding that the chances of obtaining the support of the parties were decreasing.
“I had conditions that seemed absolutely ridiculous put in front of me, which had nothing in common with the efficiency of the government (…). I realized then that the prospect of receiving an investiture vote was significantly reduced”, said the presidential adviser.
Tomac added that he preferred to withdraw in order not to prolong the political crisis and informed the president about the lack of flexibility on the part of the parties.
