The Brazilian Galeno scored the winning goal, in the last seconds of the match (90+4), with a shot to the long corner of Raya's goal, after a ball lost by the Londoners in the middle of the field.
Galeno had missed the biggest chances of the match, in the first half (21): first he sent a shot into the crossbar, and then he restarted by the goal from the ideal position.
Porto had another notable situation, also in the first half, through Nico Gonzalez (38), but it was imprecise.
Arsenal's best opportunity belonged to Saliba (35), who missed the goal with a header.
For most of the time the game took place between the two squares, neither team managing to dominate or have clear opportunities. Arsenal were coming in after scoring 21 goals in their previous five games.
The Portuguese defender of Brazilian origin Pepe (40 years old) reached, on this occasion, 119 matches played in the UEFA Champions League. The players in the first “eleven” of Arsenal had only 104 appearances in the Champions League.
The second leg will take place in London on March 12.
Arsenal have not reached the quarter-finals of the competition since 2010.
