Reached the second preliminary round of the Champions League, after “the training” with Virtus (San marino), won 11-1 overall, the champion of Romania will meet the winner of the title in Israel. Tonight (8:30 p.m., Pro TV), at the Steaua Stadium, the hosts start with the first chance for several reasons.
First of all, the opponents are missing five players, all called up to the Olympic national team of Israel that captured the football competition in Paris. Then, FCSB have already ticked off five official games this summer, while Maccabi Tel Aviv only had one game, that’s right, one won in the Super Cup, 2-0 against Maccabi Petah Tikva on July 15.
And there is another detail that favors the FCSB. Like all the formations in Israel, Maccabi Tel Aviv is also deprived of the advantage of its home ground due to the war in the Middle East. So the return leg with FCSB will be played, in Budapest, on July 31, from 21.00.
After the draw at UEFA headquarters, FCSB and Maccabi Tel Aviv already know what awaits them, depending on the outcome of the direct match. The winner of the double will advance to the third preliminary round of the Champions League where they will face the winner of the match between Shamrock Rovers (Ireland) and Sparta Prague (Czech Republic). The first leg will be played on August 6/7, and the second leg on August 13.
Instead, the loser of the FCSB – Maccabi Tel Aviv duel will go to the third preliminary round of the Europa League. Where will Panevėžys (Lithuania) – Jagiellonia Białystok (Poland) lose the match. The two legs are scheduled for August 8 and 15.
