Tourists who want to take the pebbles from the famous Lalaria beach on the Greek island of Skiathos as souvenirs are risking huge fines, as part of a campaign to protect the beach’s spectacular scenery.
According to Keep Talking Greece, in collaboration with the Port Authorities, the Cultural Association of Skiathos launched the campaign “Take a photo, don’t take a pebble – Save Lalaria beach”.
The unique pebbles, called “lalaria” in the local dialect, form only on this beach, and its centuries-old beauty is threatened by the human factor.
“Evidence was found that the deterioration of the unique landscape is not, to some extent, caused by erosion”the cultural association writes on its website and Facebook page.
The landscape of Lalaria beach has visibly deteriorated in the last ten years, and the changes are partially irreversible. The port authorities support the campaign to protect the beach and prohibit tourists from taking pebbles or stones as souvenirs, those who break the rule risking fines between 400 and 1,000 euros.
The steps to launch the initiative to protect Lalaria beach started as early as 2014.
The Cultural Association and the Skiathos Port Authorities have taken new steps to implement the protection plan.
Signs have been installed on the beach warning tourists of the fines they risk if they take pebbles or stones as souvenirs.
Skiathos is a small Greek island in the northwestern Aegean Sea. It is the westernmost island of the Northern Sporades archipelago, located east of the Pelion peninsula in the region of Magnesia on the mainland and west of the island of Skopelos.
The island is a popular tourist destination due to its many beaches and forested landscape.
Skiathos has over 60 beaches, mostly sandy, spread along its 44 kilometers of coastline. These include Achladies, Lalaria, Troulos, Vromolimnos, Koukounaries, Asselinos, Megali Ammos and Mandraki.
