Former Director of the SRI, Eduard Hellvig, published on Monday, July 14, on the X platform a message denying the speculations that the power games on the political scene would orchestrate.

He recognizes that he has heard “frequently, from the press, from those who are not necessarily friends or even from those who are my friends”, that they would be “behind” the various things that happen, that they would have heard of “Hellvig groups, more or less machiavelic plans, strategies and fabrics meant to preserve my role, but these are only to preserve the role in the game. fed either by fear, hope, or by the public appetite for conspiracy theories.

“I’m afraid I have to disappoint everyone”

“I want, say, power. Again. Why? It’s not clear.

Certainly, some of those who regularly launch these scenarios make it out of some fear, others with hope (and thank them), others because nothing sells better than a good conspiracy. I am afraid I have to disappoint everyone ”, he writes on X.

The former head of the SRI categorically rejects these interpretations and recalls that he has resigned from the position of director of the Romanian Intelligence Service almost two years ago, a gesture that he publicly explained and which he considers valid today.

“I resigned almost two years ago from the position of head of the SRI and those who still look for the answer to that decision should read the text I wrote on that occasion. I believed every word and I believe today. It was the correct decision for me and for the ideals in which I believe. I lose the function. Eduard Hellvig continued, comparing the situation now with the mentality of the old security, who considered that any opposition act was an anomaly and that “someone was behind.”

“Security, the odious institution of the totalitarian regime, had a mantra. Each time it was confronted with an act of opposition, it considered that it is beyond reason. An anomaly, an horror that cannot have simple explanations. Consequently, the securityists were always looking to know” who is in the back “. To discern alone, someone was “in the back”.

Well, if there is still this security inheritance to always look for “what’s in the back”, I see myself forced to answer: It’s not me. And I do not want to be ”, is the message of the former head of the SRI.

“Romania is not a graph in PowerPoint”

At the same time, Hellvig warns that Romania is going through a difficult period, with a fragile majority, confronted with painful reforms, and without empathy and solidarity, the necessary measures risk being rejected by society.

“Romania goes through difficult times, and the immediate future has no good signs. Politically, there is a fragile majority, which has assumed a painful reforms and economic measures. It will need all the understanding and solidarity from all the factors responsible for this period to be overcome. of statistics ”, warns Eduard Hellvig.

He points out that without empathy towards the most affected, the reforms will fail, and Romania “does not allow a new failure, because it would be the last”.

“Without empathy, without taking into account the reality of society, the danger is for the body to reject the drug. Whether it is necessary. It will be difficult, if we consider that we do not talk about people, but about statistics. It will be impossible without empathy for the most hit, for those who must, again, pay for politicians.

It is also the time for the ordinary pride, intrigues and struggles to cease. The alternative is much worse. Romania does not afford a new failure, because it would be the last“He says.

“Extremism is waiting for its turn”

He also believes that we are in the situation where extremism is prepared to exploit any wrong step of politicians.

“Extremism is waiting for its turn and I do not think it is necessary to emphasize what this means. On the other hand to consider that power is exercised for the sake of power and that power is just a way to impose is a great mistake.” he warns politicians.

At the same time, the former head of the SRI emphasizes that “power means nothing, if those in the name of which you exercise do not feel that they are part of it” and consider that power must be used to unite the energies of society around a clear purpose, warning that only orders and directives will not make progress: “Power means nothing, if those in the name of which you exercise do not feel that they are part of it. The true power is not to dictate orders and directives, but to find cohesion, to unite the energies for a well -specified purpose. Medicine does not work only if the doctor is skilled, but especially if the patient is willing to fight against the disease.

I want these things to be understood by those to whom the Romanians gave the vote and in which they put these last hopes. I wish them to succeed and confirm this confidence. I wish them success. “

Finally, the former director of the SRI definitively clarifies his position on any scenario on his involvement in the current policy:

“Life has developed my ability (or defect) of seeing things in depth and future oriented. But, at this time of life and career, I do not want to be associated with any project. Neither behind nor front.” is his firm message.
