Romania has achieved a remarkable result at the International Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad (Ioaa) 2025, held in Mumbai, India. The national lot won four gold medals, a performance announced on Thursday by the Ministry of Education and Research.

Medalist students

The four gold awarded students are:

  • Mendel Emanuel Mendelsohn, 12th grade, International Theoretical High School of Informatics Bucharest;
  • Teodor Bichir, 11th grade, International Theoretical High School of Informatics Bucharest;
  • Bogdan Rusa, 11th grade, “Emil Racoviță” National College in Cluj-Napoca;
  • Vlad Bolohan, 10th grade, International Theoretical High School of Informatics Bucharest.

The team also included David Palaghianu, a student in the 10th grade at the “Stefan cel Mare” National College in Suceava.

A world -level competition

The contest held between 11 and 21 August, bringing together participants from 64 countries. The students have held five complex tests: theoretical, practical (observations with the telescope), the planetary test, “Sky Map” (Muta map) and data analysis.

The training and selection of the lots was made in Suceava, by Stefan cel Mare Suceava University, Suceava County School Inspectorate, Cygnus scientific society, in partnership with Suceava Sports Program“, The Ministry of Education said in a Facebook post.

Coordination and organization

The organizational coordination from the Ministry of Education and Research was provided by Prof. Elisabeta Ana Naghi, and the scientific part was led by Prof. Petru Crăciun, from the Suceava County School Inspectorate, and by Prof. Cristian Pîrghie, from the “Stefan cel Mare” University in Suceava.
