George Simion, the president of AUR, said on Wednesday, January 8, that he does not believe that the elections will take place in May “until he sees the Government Decision”.

“I had no expectations from the PSD, which through the voice of Lucian Romaşcanu clearly showed the direction today: presidential in the fall or next year, and happy birthday, when Călin Georgescu’s trial at the ECDO ends. At least the Pesedists do not claim to be democrats and pro-Europeans except when they are forced by the system to support Lasconi.
The organization of elections on March 23/April 6 was a lie, as I don’t think they will be organized on May 4 and 18 until I see the Government Decision!“, the AUR leader wrote on his personal website.
Also, Simion emphasized that the Romanians want the resumption of the second round of the elections, not considering postponing the vote until the spring as democratic.
“Romanians want free elections, they want the resumption of the second round of the presidential elections, and all those who obstruct democracy must assume political and moral responsibility. There is nothing democratic about inventing pretexts for postponing the vote until after Easter. There is nothing democratic about invoking all kinds of phantasmagoria to prevent people from expressing their choice. This is not the behavior of ‘people new to politics’ – it is simply hypocrisy”claimed Simion.
About Ilie Bolojan and Nicușor Dan, the AUR leader says that they did not declare anything “to defend democracy”.
“When the CCR canceled the elections and blocked the popular will, Bolojan and Nicusor Dan didn’t say a word to defend democracy. On the contrary, they applauded the way in which the fundamental rights of the Romanians were violated. (…) I warned from the very beginning that they would extend the date of the elections as much as possible. (…) We remember the period after December 6 and Ilie Bolojan’s statement clearly said that he wants them after Easter, hoping that the wave of discontent among Romanians will subside in the meantime. Nicusor Dan pretends to be a democrat, but he is, in fact, a party to this gross violation of the Constitution, to this coup d’état, saying that he does not agree with the “urgency of the electoral calendar” and that we should not rush. And the real candidate of the PNL, beyond all the media hype, is Nicusor Dan, the one prepared by Iohannis as his successor at Cotroceni”George Simion reported.
AUR announces a massive protest
AUR announces a large protest that will take place on Sunday, January 12, against the decision regarding the cancellation of the presidential elections. About the protest, Simion says that “zthousands of Romanians from all over the country and from the diaspora will gather to demand the respect of their vote, the resumption of the 2nd round, but also the removal of the Iohannis regime”.
“On January 12, from 2:00 p.m., University Square will become the site of the largest rally against the abusive decision of the regime led by Klaus Iohannis to cancel the presidential elections”announces AUR in an official statement, according to news.ro.
Elections in May
Following the meeting on Wednesday, January 8, the governing coalition determined that the presidential elections will be resumed on May 4 and 18, respectively, 2025.
“The decision takes into account the need for the first round of the elections to take place at the same time as the partial elections in certain counties (elections for mayors in 13 municipalities, for Buşteni City Hall, Zalău City Hall and Bihor County Council) and the need for the election dates not to overlap with the Easter and Florii holidays”the statement says.
