The Minister of Justice, Alina Gorghiu, declared on Tuesday that Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu would have consulted with the political parties on the issue of establishing the calendar for the presidential elections “to give the PSD a public reason to justify the postponement of these elections”. The PNL vice-president believes that the coalition leaders will debate on Thursday, including the possibility of overlapping the “second presidential round with the parliamentary elections”.

“I believe that these consultations were made to give the PSD a public reason to practically justify the postponement of these elections or bringing these elections to term. The PSD had to get out, somehow, from the isolation of the position in which they were. In fact, it was the only party that still maintained that these elections can be organized immediately after the summer, otherwise, all the political parties called at the Victoria Palace insisted on organizing these elections in November or December, on time”said Alina Gorghiu, at Digi24, according to News.ro.
The PNL Minister stated that at the consultations at the Victoria Palace: “A public communication platform was given to certain extremist and anti-European political forces, which were somehow legitimized as a result of this approach“.
Alina Gorghiu said that September is a month in which she does not think that the presidential election can be held. “Not even October. The month of November, the end of November and the beginning of December is the fixed interval in which the two parties forming the coalition will have to think about the calendar“, added the minister.
According to News.ro, the PNL vice-president also said that “they are not”: “many options to be able to play with the dates on the calendar because we have legislation and provisions of the Constitution that show us that the first round of elections must take place in November and the parliamentary elections, if I’m not mistaken, somewhere between December 2 and 21 “.
Regarding a merging of the presidential and parliamentary elections, Alina Gorghiu answered: “Why not? By law, we do not have any kind of prohibition to hold these elections“. “I think that this discussion on Thursday will also attack this possibility of overlapping the elections, the second presidential round with the parliamentary elections. If this overlap is opportune, this will be decided at the political level, at the level of the coalition leadership. It’s a question of three weekends or two weekends in which we will organize elections, if they will be combined“, added the Minister of Justice.
Alina Gorghiu believes “that it is healthy to have these overlapping, merged elections, the second round of the presidential and parliamentary elections“. The liberal minister indicated that the PNL has not yet made a decision, but she believes that both the PNL and the PSD: “they will probably go with all the arguments at the meeting on Thursday and a conclusion will be reached”.
Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu declared, on Tuesday, after the end of the consultations on the subject of the presidential date, that all political forces want a quick resolution of the electoral calendar. The Prime Minister announced that the options proposed by the political parties will be presented to the Coalition on Thursday.
PNL President Nicolae Ciucă declared, on Monday, at the end of the party’s National Political Bureau meeting, that all BPN members agreed to support the holding of the presidential elections on time.
