Three years after being suspended for doping, Simona Halep has reacted after Nick Kyrgios faces the same problem. She has not forgotten that the Australian criticized her then.
In a story on Instagram, the Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion stated bluntly: “Never hit someone when they are on the ground. Life has a strange way of twisting situations and an even stranger way of telling the difference between an accident and a personal choice“.
Simona Halep has not forgotten that when, in 2022, the Tennis Integrity Agency announced her suspension following a positive result in an anti-doping control during the US Open, Kyrgios commented as harshly as possible: “I feed on bananas and Coca-Cola during the 5-set matches. And my track record in such matches speaks for itself. Maybe the players should just stop talking nonsense, look in the mirror at the end of the day and say to themselves: “Yes, I did well. It is not a great philosophy»“.
Despite maintaining her innocence, Halep was banned for four years before her ban was reduced to nine months after she appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Kyrgios also criticized Sinner when he tested positive for an anabolic steroid in 2025, leading to a three-month ban. And the Italian claimed that a positive result was due to accidental contamination. And the Australian reacted immediately. “A sad day for tennis. There is no fairness in this sport. It’s ridiculous, whether it’s an accident or a premeditated act. If you test positive twice for a banned substance (a steroid)… you should be suspended for two years. Your performance has been improved. Massage cream? What nonsense!” Kyrgios said.
The Australian chose to speak directly about the problem he is facing. He said in a message published on social media: “I recently failed a doping test in Mallorca after testing positive for cocaine. I made a huge mistake and I take full responsibility. Above all, I feel sorry for the children who watch me. I know what an example this sets and I am deeply disappointed in myself“, said the tennis player.
Kyrgios also spoke about the complicated period he went through in recent years: “The last few years of injuries have affected me enormously, both physically and mentally. My body could no longer do what my mind expected it to do, and having to accept that I was near the end of my career was harder than I ever imagined.eh,” he explained.
However, the Australian wanted to specify that these problems are not a justification for what happened. He announced that he would be taking a 28-day break from social media and public appearances, saying he wanted to focus on his own situation. “This was a wake-up call for me. For the next 28 days I will be withdrawing from social media and public life while I focus on getting things in order“, the athlete said.
