Halfway through the Olympics, Romania has already surpassed the number of medals won in the last two editions

After a rather obscure period, Romania obtained 7 medals in the first week of competition at the Olympic Games in Paris. The tricolors made the national anthem sing three times, in three other times they won the silver, and once, the bronze.

At the 2024 Olympics, our delegation managed to return to the level of 2008 and 2012, the last editions we counted on. After just a few days, Romania took about as many medals as it won in Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Tokyo 2020 (contested in 2021) combined.

So far, the credit goes to the athletes for whom water is their second home. The ball was opened by swimming star David Popovici, author of two fabulous races in the 100m and 200m freestyle. Then the rowers entered the scene, who monopolized the most brilliant medals, in the women’s 8+1 and the men’s double rowing. Three more silver medals were brought by Romania’s golden girls.

The Olympic Games end on August 11. Romania still has chances for medals in kayak-canoe, through Cătălin Chirilă, team table tennis, apparatus gymnastics, through Ana Maria Bărbosu and Sabrina Voinea, in weightlifting, through Mihaela Cambei and Loredana Toma or in athletics, through Alina Rotaru.
