The Prefect of Argeș County, Ioana Făcăleață, convened the County Committee for Emergency Situations (CJSU) on Thursday evening after oil and fuel stains were observed on the surface of Lake Vidraru. The authorities have taken measures to prevent pollutants from reaching water treatment plants.

“We have ordered all the necessary measures to isolate and neutralize the pollution and to prevent its propagation downstream of the dam”, declared the prefect.

She specified that the water supply of the operator Aquaterm AG 98 SA must be ensured without affecting its quality. The water company constantly monitors water quality and informs the population.

The Environmental Guard, the Public Health Directorate, the County Police Inspectorate, the Veterinary Sanitary and Food Safety Directorate, the Argeș Vedea Water Basin Administration and other competent institutions will supervise the evolution of the situation.

According to the prefect, the pollution was observed after the melting of the ice sheets on the lake.

The first hypotheses indicate that the substances would have come either from a boat that sunk about a month ago, or from another boat that broke down recently.

“The area has been cordoned off and the discharge stopped so that the pollution does not reach the treatment plants. The situation is constantly monitored to protect the public“, Ioana Făcăleață also specified.
