A Romanian tourist’s vacation on the island of Thasos turned into an unpleasant experience after he left his car in an area where parking was prohibited. The man claims that a local ripped off his license plate and threw it into a ravine, and he had to search for it to be able to move on.
The incident was told by the tourist himself on a Facebook group dedicated to Romanians who spend their holidays in Thasos. It says the incident happened near Paradise Beach, one of the most popular destinations on the Greek island.
According to his testimony, the arranged parking lot was fully occupied, so he decided to leave the car on the access road, in an area marked with the indicator “No Parking”. Although he claims he tried not to block traffic, a driver behind the wheel of a van became angry at the parked car and ripped off its license plate.
“Hello! Great care in general. I went to Paradise Beach in the afternoon and their parking lot was full, which is why I parked further up the access road (not in the upper parking lot) where it said “NO PARKING”. I parked it, I say, so as not to confuse the traffic, but a guy drove by with a van that I “messed up” and took my registration number and threw it into the abyss. My luck is that I found the number to put it back. Bad experience. Park where it’s OK and safe.”the Romanian reported on a forum dedicated to vacations in Greece.
Later, the author of the post came back with an explanation, stating that he was not trying to justify his decision, but to warn other tourists not to repeat the same mistake.
“For the curmudgeons, this post is meant to discourage exactly what I did!”he also wrote.
The parking lots in Thasos, a challenge in high season
In the summer season, the famous beaches of Thasos, such as Paradise Beach, Golden Beach or Marble Beach, attract thousands of tourists every day, and the parking lots fill up quickly from the early hours of the morning. For this reason, many drivers are tempted to leave their cars on the side of the road or in places where stopping is prohibited.
According to the provisions of the new Greek Highway Code, illegal parking can be fined between 40 and 150 euros. Depending on the situation, drivers also risk additional measures, such as the suspension of license plates for a period of 10 to 20 days or the suspension of their driver’s license.
In the case of the Romanian tourist, the registration plate was recovered after he searched for it in the area where it had been thrown, thus managing to put it back and continue his vacation.
