Hornbach, one of the main local retailers of construction and gardening materials, announces the inauguration of the tenth store in the local network, in the Colentina neighborhood of Bucharest, on September 3, 2025. The opening of this location is part of the extension plan of the retailer, meant to cover all the area of the capital and to raise the capital.
“Since entering Romania, Hornbach has proposed to be present in all the important areas of Bucharest. We already have shops in the southern areas (Berceni), West (Militari) and North (Balotești), and, with this opening, we complete our presence in the Capital, covering for the first time the eastern area of the city”he said Radu Oniga, General Manager Hornbach Romania.

Major investment and generous surface
According to his statements, the total investment in the new Hornbach store has amount to over 48 million euros, an amount that also includes the initial merchandise stock. In total, Hornbach has so far invested over 300 million euros in Romania.
With an extended range of building materials and gardening products, the store is built on a Land with an area of over 45,000 m², and the total sales space exceeds 18,000 m². It includes the Drive-in area, which covers 4,900 m², and the garden area, with an area of over 4,700 m², along with specialized departments in petshop & aquarium and interior design.
Around the store were arranged 515 parking spaces, of which part equipped with charging stations for electric vehicles, as well as over 14,700 m² of green spaces – 12,476 m² on the ground, 1,902 m² integrated in parking and 358 m² for trees planted between parking places.
Sustainable construction and low impact on the environment
The new Hornbach store in Colentina was designed and made based on sustainable development principles, in order to reduce the impact on the environment and to increase energy efficiency. The building is equipped with photovoltaic panels for the production of energy from renewable sources. The store also benefits from a high -performance thermal envelope of the facades, roof and floor, as well as technical solutions that minimize the thermal bridges. The ventilation system with heat recoverers allows the energy to take over from the exhaust air and its transfer to the freshly introduced air, and the air conditioning is provided by heat pumps, which significantly reduce the energy consumption.
The lighting is made in full with LED technology, with a low consumption and a long service life, and in the construction and arrangement of the space, sustainable materials, with low environmental impact, were used. During the works, the waste generated on the site have been managed efficiently, and the outer areas include over 14,700 m² of green spaces, which contribute to the improvement of the microclimate and to the creation of a pleasant environment and the local community.
120 new jobs and intensive training of the team
According to company representatives, over 120 new jobs They were created with the opening of the Hornbach store in Colentina.
“At the time of the inauguration, the Hornbach Colentina store will work with a team of over 120 employees, carefully selected and prepared to meet the needs of customers with professionalism and dedication. We emphasize the exclusive recruitment of people in Romania, because we consider that an effective communication, in Romanian, as well Customers in our stores ”said Mihaela Boghiu, director of HR of the company.
The training process took place in the other Hornbach stores in Bucharest – Berceni, Militari and Balotești – and included both theoretical and practical training. The new colleagues have acquired technical knowledge about products, participated in simulations of interactions with customers and followed sales and communication trainings, being also familiar with the internal processes and quality standards of the company.
With the completion of the recruitment process and the full integration of the new team, the total number of Hornbach employees in Romania will exceed the threshold of 1,400, thus strengthening the company’s position as one of the most stable and involved employers in the DIY sector and building materials.
Digitalization for a faster and more pleasant experience
Digitalization is one of the strategic development directions for Hornbach, and the new store in Colentina integrates a series of solutions meant to make both internal processes and customer purchase experience.
Self -service cash registersalready familiar to Hornbach customers, contribute to reducing waiting time, while the billing terminals located at the exit of the store give buyers the opportunity to issue their invoices alone, avoiding queues. Also, the internal phones have been replaced with mobile scanning devices, used by employees to provide customers with detailed information about products directly from the sales surface.
These measures are part of a larger digital modernization plan, which aims to constantly improve the purchase process.
“We are constantly investing in digitization to simplify the purchase process and provide customers with a pleasant and efficient experience. The next step is to optimize the software to be cash registers, so that the number of interactions necessary to complete the transaction is reduced, and the logging in the employees will be shortened.”added Radu Oniga.

Plans for the future
After the inauguration of the Colentina store, Hornbach continues its ambitious development plans on the local market, considering Opening of six more stores in the next two to four years. In parallel, The company is preparing the inauguration of the second store in Timisoara, scheduled for this autumnthus strengthening the presence in the west of the country.
