The admission of students to high school, in 2024, is also done by computerized distribution. In order for parents to understand how the process takes place, a guide was drawn up by Siveco, the company that created the software for the Ministry of Education.
Computerized distribution of admission to high school PHOTO The truth
The emotions of parents and students continue even after the completion of the National Assessment. And this in the conditions in which High School Admission is coming, which in 2024, will still be based on computerized distribution. Although the system has been in use since 2017, there are quite a few parents and students who do not know the assignment criteria using the computer. Siveco, the company that created the software for the Ministry of Education, published a guide that explains the stages and tie-breaking criteria.
Carefully filling in the options the first and most important step
According to the guide, the first step to avoid having unwanted experiences with the computerized allocation is to fill in the options on the admission form very carefully, with the candidates’ preferences, in the desired order. According to the guide, parents are advised to pass all high schools, obviously in the desired order, to be sure that the student gets a place in the fall. ” Fill in the options you want the most in the first places, even if you are not sure that the media allows you to enter these options. You will not be disadvantaged. Continue with options you would like, then options you wouldn’t mind being assigned to. It ends with the least desirable options, but which you must list on the sheet, just to be safe. It’s better to get into a high school you don’t like than not get into at all.(….) Filling out a large number of options on the admissions form can’t hurt you in any way–you get into your first choice anyway. what other places are there Conversely, too few options can seriously reduce your chances of being admitted. There is a risk of not having a good enough average for any of the expressed options,” states the guide.
The specialists also say that parents should validate the forms with a sense of responsibility, be aware of possible mistakes in the transcription of grades from the school catalogs on the option sheet, the name of the candidate and the code of the high schools. The computer “doesn’t know” that a student filled in code 115 but is actually interested in the specialization with number 151, or that the graduation average is not 5.75 but 7.55. in order to avoid the inconvenience caused by the wrong transcription of the data on the form , the procedure requires printing the cards as they were entered in the database. The sheet thus printed, called “witness sheet” is sent to the school of origin. Inconsistencies between the completed form and the witness form must be reported immediately to the school management, which returns to the data collection center to make the correction,” states the guide. After numerous checks and the correction of any mistakes, the computerized distribution is actually carried out.
How the 2024 High School Admission computerized distribution algorithm works
The assignment algorithm sorts students in descending order of admission average, from the highest average to the lowest, according to the options. The high school admission average is actually the overall average obtained by each individual student in the National Assessment, calculated as an arithmetic average, with two decimal places, without rounding, of the grades obtained in the assessment tests. Based on this average, the first option on the list validated and completed by parents with all high school codes is searched for each student. If the student finds free places, according to the average, in the first chosen option, he will be declared admitted to that high school. If there are no more places in the first option, the second is considered, and so on, until the student is assigned, according to the average, to the high school where he finds free places.
“We assume that the student has an average of 8 and at his first option all the places were occupied by students with higher averages than his. If there are still vacancies in his second option, he will be assigned to his second option. Otherwise, the third option on his card is checked, and the following, in order, until he finds his first option where there are still free places.”, shows an example of distribution on edupedu.ro. There are also particular situations in which a student with a higher average can lose a place at high school in favor of a student with a lower average. For example, a student has an admission average of 9.10 and has put option A, second on the choice sheet, and a second student, with an average of 8.99, has option one on the choice sheet, the latter will be assigned to that place, to the detriment of the other, even though it has a lower average.
Tie-off criteria in 2024
There are cases where students have equal admission averages. That’s when the tie-breaking criteria come into play. This year, the first criterion takes into account the general high school graduation average. Then, the grade obtained in the Romanian language and literature test at the National Assessment. If even then they cannot be separated, the third criterion is also applied, i.e. the grade obtained in the mathematics test of the National Evaluation. In the case of ethnic minorities and students applying for enrollment in a high school specific to minorities, the result of the mother tongue test is taken into account.
