Specifically, according to INS data, on January 1, the resident population was 19,064,409 people, an increase of 9.9 thousand people compared to January 1, 2023.
At the same time, there are more women in Romania than men, but also more people who live in cities, respectively 51.9% of Romanians live in the urban environment, and 51.4% are female.
Despite the slight increase, the phenomenon of demographic aging continues to intensify, with a ratio of 123.8 elderly people to 100 young people under 15 years of age.
“The phenomenon of demographic aging continues to intensify (rising to 123.8 elderly people per 100 young people under 15), the gap (difference no) between the elderly population aged 65 and over and the young population aged 0-14 reaching 736,000 people, up from 669,000 people on January 1, 2023”, the INS data show.
The percentage of people over 65 increased from 19.7% in 2023 to 20% in 2024, while the share of children under 14 stagnated at 16.2%. The demographic dependency ratio increased from 56.0 to 56.8 young and elderly persons per 100 adults, indicating greater pressure on the working population to support those no longer working. This means that a large part of Romania’s population consists of elderly people.
In addition, the balance of international migration was positive in 2023, with a surplus of 82,000 people, this is also the main factor that contributed to the population growth. Immigration was predominantly male (57.4%), while females constituted 52.4% of emigrants.
The female population remained the majority, even if it decreased slightly, by 0.2% compared to last year, reaching 9.79 million people. And the urban population fell slightly by 0.4% to 9,898,000 people.
