A Deutsche Bank study shows how much a beer costs in dozens of cities around the world and which destinations are the most “friendly” with the wallet from this point of view.
The price of a beer often tells how expensive a city is. That’s why Deutsche Bank included this drink in its annual report Mapping the World’s Prices 2026, which compares the cost of living in dozens of destinations around the world. The analysis also takes into account rent, food, clothes, cigarettes or transport.
In addition, the report also calculates the so-called “Oasis Index”, an indicator based on the cost of five beers and two packs of cigarettes, notes the DailyMail. According to this criterion, Melbourne is the most expensive city in the world, with an average cost of around 130 euros, ahead of Sydney.
Cities where a beer costs the most
And when looking at just the price of a 0.5 liter bottle of local beer, Melbourne remains top of the pack in terms of the “peppery” price. Here, a beer costs 4.55 euros on average.
Singapore and Sydney are the only cities where the average price exceeds 3.50 euros, and the top ten also include Tel Aviv, Helsinki, Birmingham, Dublin, Kuala Lumpur, San Francisco and Oslo.
It should be noted that Birmingham surpasses London in this ranking, the capital of Great Britain being only in 11th place.

Cities where beer costs the least
At the other end of the scale is Shanghai, where a 0.5 liter beer costs just 78 cents on average. Beijing is very close, with a price of 81 cents, and in Frankfurt the same beer costs about one euro, while Rio de Janeiro and Prague complete the top five positions of tourist destinations where beer is cheap.
Frankfurt is the only German city in the top three positions and proves that beer tradition does not necessarily mean high prices. Although it has fewer breweries and pubs than Berlin or Munich, the city is more accessible to tourists. Recommended spots include TapHouse Frankfurt, the naïve and historic Zu den 12 Aposteln.
In Rio de Janeiro, a beer costs just over one euro and can be drunk in well-known places such as Bar e Restaurante Urca, Bohemia or Pavão Azul, in Copacabana. Another recommended stop is Hocus Pocus DNA Brewery, of which one tourist says:
With an average price of 1.06 euros for a beer, Prague remains one of the favorite destinations for beer lovers. The city is known both for its beer tradition and for its large number of breweries and pubs. Among the most popular are Tretter’s New York Bar, Hemingway Bar and the Vinohradský Pivovar craft brewery.
