In the last two weeks, Romania’s presence in the European press has been dominated by negative events, from murders and the involvement of a Romanian in cases of military sabotage to the tragic accident involving PAOK supporters. Positive topics about sports, cars and tourism were rarer.
The analysis is based exclusively on the data collected by the media monitoring platform NewsVibe Romania for the period January 31–February 6, 2026, writes Informat.ro.
The data was collected by the media monitoring platform NewsVibe Romania, during the last month, finding 4,569 articles published in European countries, especially in Germany, Greece, Italy and Great Britain.
Of the 4,569 articles, 3,700 (82%) have a neutral tone, 666 (15%) negative and 157 (3%) positive.
What were the most discussed topics about Romania
The tragic accident in Timiș in which PAOK supporters were involved
One of the topics was about the fatal accident in Timiș, when a minibus carrying Greek PAOK supporters collided head-on with a truck. They were traveling from Greece to Lyon, for a Europa League match.
In the European press, Romania was constantly mentioned as the place of the tragedy, of the intervention of the authorities and, later, of the repatriation ceremony.
The Greek portal Protothema presented details about the accident in Romania, the reactions of the club and the solidarity gestures of other European clubs, emphasizing the Romanian-Hellenic cooperation, the messages of condolence and the support for the repatriation of the victims, in an empathetic and positive tone.
The Hamburg sabotage
Another topic is the attempted sabotage of German military ships in the port of Hamburg, in which one of the suspects is a Romanian citizen. This week, DIICOT searched the home of the Romanian, from Tulcea county, arrested in Germany.
He, along with a Greek citizen, are involved in a security file relevant to NATO and the EU.
German media such as T Online and Tagesschau put the Emden accident in the context of vulnerabilities in military infrastructure, citing the discovery of hazardous materials earlier. Spiegel and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung focus on domestic security and authorities’ investigations, without tying Romania to a hostile agenda.
The general tone is neutral, but the mention of Romanian nationality can subtly influence the perception of the Romanian community in Germany.
The case of Vasile Frumuzache
The Italian press wrote about Vasile Frumuzache, the Romanian arrested for the murder of two young escorts in Italy, Denisa Maria Adas and Ana Maria Andrei, the victims being found in Prato and Montecatini.
The investigation showed that the Romanian committed the crimes with cruelty, and after Denisa’s murder, he tried to make her body unrecognizable by beheading and setting it on fire.
The criminal planned an escape attempt from the Sollicciano penitentiary in Florence.

The Italian press, including Il Fatto Quotidiano, ANSA and La Stampa, reported in detail the double homicide trial, the escape with the sheets and the prison break.
Il Giornale used the case to criticize the penitentiary system, emphasizing the recidivism of the criminal of Romanian origin. The tone is strongly negative, and the frequent association of Romanians with serious crime amplifies the stereotypes of the Romanian community in Italy.
Sorana Cîrstea in the match with Naomi Osaka
Romania was mentioned in the European sports media in the context of the Australian Open episode, which featured Sorana Cîrstea and Naomi Osaka and was presented as a conflict related to the perception of respect between the two players.
The international press (BBC Sport, The Independent, Le Figaro) reported on the cold handshake between Sorana Cîrstea and Naomi Osaka, highlighting Osaka’s public apology.
The tone was neutral, slightly favorable to Cîrsta, presenting her as a competitive Romanian athlete, without negative stereotypes related to her nationality.
