British tourists coming to Romania are warned by the UK authorities in relation to the increased risk of thefts in the big cities. The official recommendations also concern other risks, such as cards with cards or drugs related to drugs.

The British Foreign Ministry (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office – FCDO) recommends to its citizens traveling to Romania to be vigilant, especially in the big cities, where minor thefts, but also frauds or deceivers in public spaces, crimes commonly encountered and in the United Kingdom have been reported.

Attention to your pockets!

According to British officials, big cities in Romania are reported as areas with high risk for minor crimes, especially pockets, so they recommend to its citizens who choose to visit our country increased in hotels and foreign exchange houses, where tourists are frequently targeted; In public transport, especially buses and trains connecting the airport, as well as in the central stations and airport terminals, according to information published on the official government page of the UK.

In addition, tourists are advised to avoid wearing valuables in public and keep the passport and money in safe places, such as the hotel safe, and have only the strict necessary and, possibly, a copy of the passport.

Fraud with cards in restaurants and bars

Also, the British are urged to constantly supervise the card during payment and use contactless devices when possible, because in Romania there have been reported cases in which bank cards have been copied or used fraudulently in some places.

Another important warning refers to the risk that drinks served in clubs or bars will be “altered” with substances that can lead to loss of consciousness, so that tourists are advised not to accept drinks from unknown persons and do not leave the glass unattended.

Drug related offenses: Zero tolerance

The Romanian law provides for harsh punishments for possession, consumption or drug trafficking, including cannabis. Visitors can be sentenced to years of imprisonment, even if only Romania transits, the UK warns the citizens.

Low risk of violence and terrorism

Even if Romania is considered a safe country in terms of security, the possibility of public demonstrations, usually peaceful, is mentioned. Tourists are advised to avoid crowded areas and follow the authorities’ indications, especially in the context of the Ukraine military conflict.

Although there are no recent terrorist attacks in Romania, such a risk cannot be excluded, FCDO warns, because in the current geo-political context are possible attacks could target places frequented by tourists or foreign citizens anywhere in the world.
