For this phenomenon, psychologists have several plausible explanations that could lead to solving the problem.

Figures that show how widespread the phenomenon of violence in schools is

Violence is an increasingly widespread phenomenon in schools in Romania. According to the data provided by the Ministry of Education, from the 2016-2017 school year to the last month of 2022, no less than 54,438 acts of violence were recorded in schools in the country. Of this total, approximately 10,000 cases are registered in the previous school year. The number is increasing by 7,000 cases compared to 2021, and this aspect is worrying, say psychologists.

The Ministry of Education classified acts of violence into several categories. Thus, 6,744 acts were attacks on persons, 1,326 acts were attacks on property, 1,289 cases are classified as other acts of violence or attacks on security, while 382 acts of violence are classified as attacks on school unit security.

Psychologists explain the aggressive behavior of students

Psychologists have spoken about this worrying situation and even have some explanations for the aggressive behavior of students.

According to specialists, young people are often influenced by what they watch on the Internet. At the same time, school stress can have its say.

We see serious cases, such as the one in Târgu Mureș, when a student beat a teacher. It is important to realize that students are very easily influenced. The content they watch online is often violent, and this can affect their behavior. Thus, some of them believe that they can assert themselves and stand out when they attack a student, a teacher. These students need counselling, guidance and protection from such content“, said the psychologist Andreea Coman.

Family problems affect student behavior

Psychologists also claim that, often, students are affected by the problems they have at home. Thus, family traumas can have their say at school and lead to seemingly inexplicable violence.

There are children raised by grandparents or other relatives, children who have not felt the love of their parents. They are prone to such gestures, to violence. Basically, these children experience traumas that, at some point, end up leaving their mark on their behavior. The child ends up reacting impulsively, without feeling compassion for those around him. Basically, he cannot give something that he has not received in turn“, added the psychologist.

At the same time, the specialists mentioned that anxiety and depression can lead, at some point, to aggressive behavior.

And students can be anxious, depressed, and this can lead to violence. Young people are stressed many times, especially because of the pressure at school“, concluded the psychologist from Iași.
