Ice with fecal bacteria at Burger King. What measures did ANPC take

ANPC inspectors discovered fecal bacteria in Burger King ice and suspended the use of appliances in all chain restaurants in Romania.

The National Authority for Consumer Protection (ANPC) carried out a control at a Burger King restaurant in Bucharest, where he discovered dangerous bacteria in the ice cubes used for drinks. Following the checks, the economic operator Amrest Food SRL, which manages the restaurant chain, was fined 30,000 lei, and the use of ice appliances was temporarily suspended at national level.

The use of glacier contaminated in soft drinks can have serious consequences on consumer health. In this context, the economic operator Amrest Food SRL, with the commercial name Burger King, with the working point located in the Bucharest – Ploiești Road no. 44 A, Complex Feeria, was sanctioned for violating the provisions of the Government Ordinance no. 21/1992 (modified), art. 7C, the second dash, with a fine of 30,000 lei“, Anpc said in a Facebook post.

The samples taken indicated the presence of coliform bacteria in a concentration of 2.5×10 UFC/100ml and Escherichia coli worth 1.2×10 UFC/100ml, under the conditions in which the legislation in force (Ordinance no. 7/2023) allows the value of 0 UFC/100ml for drinking water.

The ANPC representatives announced that they have proposed to stop the use of ice appliances in all Burger King units in Romania until the presentation of analyzes confirm that the ice respects the safety rules.

There is a suspicion that these contaminations could also be present in the ice -operator’s units production equipment”, The inspectors said.

Until the situation is clarified, Burger King must present new reports that attest the quality of the water used in the production of ice.
