Sorana Cîrstea (35 years old, 35 WTA) lost on Monday evening to a double Grand Slam winner, Coco Gauff (22 years old, 4 WTA), in the round of 16 of the Miami tennis tournament. It ended 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 for Gauff.
On home court, Gauff took the first set and led relatively easily, 3-1, in the second. It looked like it was heading for a minimum-set win.
However, a series of five consecutive games for Cîrstea brought equality on the table, after an hour and 20 minutes of play.
In the decider, the athlete from the USA distanced herself to 3-0 and could not be reached. In game 4 of the last leg, a spectator fainted in the stands, which led to the interruption of the match for several minutes.
The player from Târgoviște goes home with a prize of 105,720 dollars and 120 WTA points.
Delray Beach (Florida) native Coco Gauff, who won the US Open 2023 and Roland Garros 2025, now leads 2-0 overall in duels with “Sori”.
Their previous head-to-head match, from the 2020 Australian Open, also ended in three sets, 7-5 to Gauff in the decider.
