Angela Gheorghiu celebrates 35 years of international career at National Photo ARCHIVE AREAS
One of the biggest sopranos of all time, Angela Gheorghiu, will go on stage at the Romanian Arenas in Bucharest on September 7, 2025, even on her birthday, to celebrate with the Romanian public, 35 years of international career. It will be a high -fashioned anniversary concert, in which the emotion, art and holiday are under the sign of a voice that has conquered the world.
“I do not know if I chose Romania or Romania chose me for this anniversary”
The truth: Angela Gheorghiu, celebrated in September 35 years of prodigious career on the most important scenes in the world. A life dedicated to lyrical art! Why did you choose Romania (more precisely, the Romanian Arenas) to mark this double anniversary?
Angela Gheorghiu: Indeed, it is a very important anniversary and a new reference point of my career. I do not know if I chose Romania or Romania chose me for this anniversary, because, as it always happens, the proposal came from a promoter/organizer, and I accepted.
I would like to clarify a little, because my team receives many messages or requests, in all the languages of the Earth, from ordinary people to come and sing in a certain city or country: I am not the one who organizes my concerts, nor my management team, I am invited by these important opera rooms or a concert, to a contract or to a manager, by a manager, Let me sing in that place, on that stage.
I enjoyed this proposal from Mall4art, especially after the success in December last year, at the Palace Hall, with a concert organized by them. This year, the anniversary concert will take place at the Romanian Arenas because the weather is still very good in September, but also because, unfortunately, Romania does not have a real concert hall now. The Romanian Athenaeum Hall is wonderful, but unfortunately very small.
What thoughts do you have this double anniversary and personal birthday?
With thoughts of joy, but also thanks, gratitude, for what I have achieved at a professional level, for so many years. On stage, in extraordinary productions, created for me, but also in concerts worldwide and in record studios, as an exclusive artist Decca and EMI, today Warner. I am very grateful because I have taken extraordinary times from the point of view of shows, and records, having the opportunity to perform a huge discography.
I believe in this, because it is what we leave behind as interpreter artists. I was lucky and spoiled, if you want, but this happened because of my extraordinary talent as a gift from God, which is why I was aware that I will have to be responsible and be better prepared than anyone else.
I have had total confidence, since I know myself, in what I had in my artistic instinct. I also had luck to meet a teacher at the Art High School, Mia Barbu, who was a mentor and tutor from the beginning. Mia Barbu was, in fact, a popular singing teacher, but was impressed by the audition I supported in front of her at the age of 13, so impressed that she immediately created a place in the popular singing class, with the tacit understanding that I would continue to study the classic singing, because that was what I had studied since an age.
This additional place created for me in the popular canto class allowed me to study the classic singing until the second-stage admission exam, which allowed me to transfer to the only classic cantic place of the high school. This is how at 18 I was perfectly prepared and I have not changed until today the technique that I formed then. All the roles I studied, since 1984, during 6 years of conservative and 35 years of career, I studied them 100% alone. Never with a pianist or a singing teacher.
I have studied and studied enormously, until today, for every note and for every word. I wanted to assume, stylistically, every score, to interpret it according to my way and my voice. The study never ceases. The voice is a living tool, it is part of my body, and I am aware that I have to take care of it.
Prepare many surprises for the public who loves you from Bucharest …
I hope the public appreciates our program. Together with my talented colleagues we will offer a program that pleases everyone. I am glad to join Jonathan Tetelman, a top tenor of the new generation, Alexandru Tomescu, one of the few violinists of the world who sings on a Stradivarius violin, Marius Manole, an extraordinary actor and a good friend, Mihai Damian, a very talented young bar. The Philharmonic, from Radio, etc., together with conductor David Gimenez Carreras, a virtuoz and an old friend.
“Marius Manole has a charisma and an indescribable force”
Talk to us, please, about the collaboration with the actor Marius Manole. How did you get to be a stage colleagues in the anniversary show in Bucharest?
Marius is, for me, one of the most talented actors in Romania in his generation. Has a charisma and an indescribable force. He is a good and loyal friend and I am glad that he agreed to be with me in this anniversary show. We are still working on our collaboration for this event, but I trust that it will be a beautiful, exciting moment for the public, to combine music and poetry.
With what repertoire will the public have been delighted on September 7, at the Romanian Arenas?
A varied repertoire. Opera, of course, but also crossover and light music, I hope, easily recognizable by the public. I promise that the Romanian music will not be missing, otherwise it is not missing at any concert of my, all over the world. I hope the audience will leave happily from this concert.
“I never wanted to be like someone else, to copy someone”
Drawing the line now over the 35 years of brilliant international career, who do you think is the secret of the great Romanian soprano who has conquered the world?! How difficult was this road?
I never felt it was difficult. On the contrary, I was aware of the beginning that this will be my way, that “I will enter the front door” of the biggest theaters in the world, as my singing teacher, Mia Barbu, told me, from high school. I knew what I wanted and went ahead with my instinct, which always helped me.
There is no secret, but besides talent, grace and continuous study, the thing I held and I hold a lot is originality. I never wanted to be like someone else, to copy someone, I wanted to be original in everything I sing, in all my shows.
It is important to listen to them all, but to bring my own personality and my own color in each area, in each duet, every song and in every opera show. And still something very important to me, which has contributed to my success, is the vocal stamp, its uniqueness and the ease with which my voice is recognized since the first notes. That was and is another key to success.
Looking back, it may not seem so easy for me, but at every moment of my career I felt that this road is the natural one, this was and is still my normality and I cannot change that.
“It is a special emotion to sing in Romania! I would have liked to have sung more often”
How often do you go back to play at home for the public in Romania and what feelings you are trying for when you meet the public in the country …
Not very often, as you already know. They never appear on stage in secret and everyone knows when I have a show anywhere in the world, including in Romania. This is the second consecutive year in which I return to the country for a concert, an extremely rare fact that I enjoy.
I would have liked to have sang more often, but the very busy international program and the lack of serious invitations in the country decided otherwise. As I like to say, the result is important, and here we see each other again.
It is a special emotion to sing in Romania, but at the same time I admit that I have emotions all over the world, regardless of location and public. Art without true emotions I do not think it can be done and cannot conceive it.
“I dream of doing a first master class in Romania”
Do you have a tip for young lyric artists?
To be curious and brave to look for their true good teacher for those who study music in general. I am convinced that the teacher is the primordial factor for a career because he can guide all the trajectory of life as an artist and not only. I dream of doing a first master class in Romania for all talented students from the canto or for those who want an international career in music.
Obviously, I advise them to study all the time and seek to leave their own fingerprint on everything they interpret, whether it is an area, a lied or an integral work. To be honest on stage, not to try to imitate a great artist, to try to be original and creative in every detail. The public immediately appreciates and recognizes a great talent and, at the same time, is all to dream, to be carried by artists in a magical world, moving away for a few hours of everyday life, full of all kinds of trials and experiences.
The human being from instinct always needed the sound of music and later the presence of arts in his life. I remember now how the great Italian poet Dante Alighieri was the opener of a road in art, of a style called rebirth. I strongly believe that every man, artist and period of mankind needs an ideal or idealized rebirth, creation and love.
