“Today we celebrate 75 years since the establishment of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the strongest political-military alliance in history, based on the values of democracy, individual freedom and the rule of law. Klaus Iohannis pointed out that on the 75th anniversary of the founding of NATO, war has returned to Europe due to Russia's military aggression against Ukraine, stating that: “today's security challenges are among the most diverse and complex, from conventional to hybrid, cyber and even non-conventional.”
The President noted that in this difficult security context, “NATO remains united, strong and adapts conceptually, structurally, institutionally and operationally to maintain its military superiority as a deterrent against any potential adversary“. “In the last 10 years, NATO's deterrence and defense posture has been significantly strengthened, especially on the Eastern Flank, and this process will continue, based on the provisions of the NATO Strategic Concept adopted in Madrid in 2022, which enshrines deterrence and defense as the first fundamental task of the North Atlantic Alliance”, the head of state also showed.
Klaus Iohannis pointed out that Article 5 of the Washington Treaty is today “more relevant than ever”, and the commitment to collective defense “it offers each of the 32 Allies, equally, the guarantee of democratic societies, in peace and security” and that to the same extent: “we remain firmly committed, as Allies, to strengthening our own defense capabilities and contributing equitably to the sharing of responsibilities at NATO level”.
