Ion Țiriac hoped to receive aid from the state, in the sense that he would receive the land from Otopeni City Hall, and the Government would take care of the road infrastructure and utilities.

“Mr. Ţiriac came with a request for infrastructure in the field of sports. He said to me: “Marcele, don’t you see that we don’t have a multipurpose hall in Bucharest?”. I am receptive to such initiatives. I think that together, on a project that Mr. Ţiriac wants to finance, we can make tax exceptions. This is how a modern state works“, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu also declared last October.
Everything remained in the project stage. So the businessman got angry. “Sir, I have a budget there. I invested, but it doesn’t matter. I have over 50 million euros that the Foundation gave me for a multipurpose hall.
But I don’t do it anymore! I don’t go to the gym anymore, even if I have extra money. And the tennis arena is no longer covered“, declared Ion Țiriac for Gazeta Sporturilor.
Angry with the mayor and the prime minister
The businessman claimed that the mayor of Otopeni, Silviu Gheorghe, did not support him. And even Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu did not keep his word.
“The mayor of Otopeni, the poor man, says he has no money to take care of the pool that is there. If we make a multipurpose hall, we need a land for three thousand parking spaces. Those are another six hectares, seven hectares“, mentioned Ion Țiriac.
Ion Țiriac promised last year that he would invest in a modern multipurpose hall, with a minimum of 15,000 seats, in Otopeni. The project would have cost 100 million euros, according to the businessman.
The complex would have included, in addition to the multipurpose hall, for ball sports, a swimming pool named after Camelia Potec, a gym called Nadia Comăneci, a tennis academy with 30 courts.
Țiriac City would have been located next to “Henry Coandă” International Airport, where the businessman already has an indoor ice rink.
