The former great tennis player, who has an estimated fortune of 2.1 billion dollars, set his sights on the Mocioni – Teleki Castle in Căpâlnaş, located only five kilometers from the property of the Romanian royal family in Săvârşin and 90 km from the municipality of Arad.

The journalists from Glasul Aradului wrote that they also received confirmation from the officials that the billionaire Ion Ţiriac is willing to pay a large sum in exchange for the mansion that was built between 1876 and 1879.

It is located on an area of 80 hectares

“We hope an investor will come, as we understand that Ion Țiriac wants him and we understand that they have lowered the price. Here is a dendrological park, with rare species and there is a lot to do. And the building was not left in ruins, because it was maintained”declared the mayor of Birchiş commune (to which Călpâlnaș village belongs), Ioan Guţu, for the local newspaper.

Built between 1876 and 1879 by the Mocioni family, of Aromanian origin, the castle in Căpâlnaș is surrounded by a vast domain of 80 hectares, which includes forests, meadows and arable land. The building served as the residence of the Mocioni-Teleki family until 1947, when it was confiscated by the communist regime.

In 2007, the castle was reclaimed and obtained an illegitimate grandson of Jeno Teleki. Since then, the owners have rented out the estate, but in 2019, the “Little Trianon” in the west of the country was put up for sale for €1.1 million. To date, the castle has not found a new owner, although interest has not been lacking.

A 3-year-old girl is buried in the castle courtyard

The history of the castle is marked by dramatic events and legends. It was inhabited by Therezia Mocioni and her daughter, Ecaterina, who married Count Eugen Jeno Teleki. The two had two children, but the girl, Mady, died at the age of three in a tragic accident, being buried in the castle park. In 1947, Count Teleki died and was also buried in the same park. The last tenant of the castle, Count Pubi Teleki, lived in poverty and became a tragic figure in the memories of the villagers, writes Glasul Aradului.

The castle is classified as a class A historical monument, so in order to renovate it or make changes, Ion Țiriac would need approval from the Ministry of Culture.
