The announcement by Sorin Grindeanu, head of the PSD, regarding the initiation of a consultation of party members regarding remaining in the governing coalition alongside the USR and maintaining Ilie Bolojan’s position as prime minister has echoes. One of the first vice-presidents declared his option.
Marius Oprescu, PSD first vice-president, head of the Olt organization, said on Thursday, February 26, 2026, not a day after Sorin Grindeanu’s announcement made in an interview for G4 Media that he would initiate a new referendum among party members, that he would vote for the removal of the USR from the coalition and for the change of the PNL prime minister.
“Know that this consultation stems from discussions with party members who are unhappy with our participation in a coalition with the USR. The behavior of those from the USR towards us is one of the lowest kind – and I would not like to make any further comments because I would also enter their territory and I do not want to do this – but our party members, yes, are unhappy with participating in a coalition with the USR, and that is precisely why we are conducting this consultation. And they are also dissatisfied with the behavior of the current Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan towards our proposals for the government program that we have together”, said Oprescu.
The head of the PSD Olt emphasized that both the coalition and the government rely on a parliamentary majority in which the PSD secures approximately half of the number of MPs. “So you can’t ignore, when we govern together, the proposals that the Social Democratic Party has”Oprescu added. He was also dissatisfied with the fact that PSD failed to make Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan take into account the proposals of the social democrats.
“Certainly, in the next period, as I also said for the budget, things will no longer be this way”threatened Oprescu.
Asked by the “Adevărul” reporter what will be his answer to the questions proposed by Grindeanu, Oprescu was categorical: “Personally, I will vote for Ilie Bolojan to no longer be prime minister, nor for the USR to be in government.”
According to the same PSD official’s statement, the social democrats do not consider exiting the government, which could translate into forcing the departure of Ilie Bolojan and the USR from the government.
“We had a consultation within the party and the party said it wants us to stay in government, but not in the current formula,” Oprescu also said.
