The president of UDMR, Kelemen Hunor, said about the candidacy of Nicușor Dan that it was an expected announcement. He also believes that a single candidate from the pro-European coalition should be appointed.

“It was an expected announcement, because Nicusor Dan, a few days ago, after the cancellation of the presidential elections, said that he had this intention, on the one hand. On the other hand, yes, he took the initiative. He dictates the cadence now and, from this point of view, I think he has an advantage over those who will announce themselves later. Of course, we have to wait for who will run, after that we can say more.
But, as the general elected mayor of the Capital, yes, he has this chance to enter the competition with real chances. It has this ability. It is more difficult for me to comment at this moment, because the coalition still wants to have only one candidate, without discussing names. This desire still remains“, said Kelemen Hunor, according to Agerpres.
Asked if there are still chances to appoint a common candidate of the coalition, and that he should be Nicuşor Dan, the UDMR leader showed that anything is possible.
“To be appointed, to be supported, everything is possible in Romania. I don’t want to go further with speculations, but anything is possible. I don’t know if PNL supports it, I don’t know if PSD would support it, but for now in the coalition we discussed, it’s good to have only one candidate from the coalition”stated the president of UDMR.
Regarding USR, Hunor stated that he will continue to support Elena Lasconi. He is also of the opinion that any candidate must be supported by those who are in the governing coalition.
“If USR withdraws from the coalition, it is certain that Elena Lasconi will also announce that she will run – I am convinced of this, because I don’t really see the reasons why she should not make this announcement – in the end the electorate will decide. I still believe that in the future government coalition, regardless of how it will look, there must be a candidate supported by all those who are in the government coalition, in the parliamentary majority“, the president of UDMR sent.
