Kelemen Hunor: Those who will form the new government must have only one candidate in the presidential elections

The president of UDMR, Kelemen Hunor, claims that the parties that will form the next government must nominate a common candidate by the end of the year for the presidential elections, which will be resumed next year. The leaders of the pro-European parties will have a new meeting at 19.00.

“Those who want to form the government must have only one candidate in the presidential elections”argued Kelemen Hunor at Digi24, arguing that the current coalition failed to get its candidates to the second round and that there is a need to organize the presidential elections as quickly as possible. The proposed scenario indicates the first round on March 16 and the second round on March 31.

“I would like to have elections in March. A common candidate to be nominated by the end of the year”Kelemen Hunor also said, being of the opinion that a longer postponement of the election, until June, would not be favorable.

According to the head of the Union, the candidate must be approved by each party, an example being given, among others, the name of the capital’s mayor Nicușor Dan.

The leaders of the pro-European parties will have a new meeting at 19.00.

At the same time, the head of the UDMR also claimed that the position of prime minister should go to the party with the most mandates in Parliament. “Rotation has been tried, the party with the most mandates must have the first chance. (…) The big parties have disappeared in Romania, there are no big parties anymore, there are medium parties”Kelemen Hunor also said.

PNL, PSD, USR, UDMR and the minority group in the Chamber of Deputies are to hold negotiations for the formation of the future government cabinet, and Nicușor Dan represented a proposal from several associations and personalities for the option of a common candidate.

On the other hand, the president of AUR, George Simion, launched an appeal on Monday “to patriots and unionists”for the formation of a sovereignist bloc around the political formation he leads. “We must all stop this coup, we must elect our president, the one voted by the people, on Calin Georgescu, not the one that some and others are trying to invent, respectively possibly Nicușor Dan”, claimed George Simion.

The presidential elections would be resumed next year, after the installation of the new government cabinet, which will decide on a new program.
