On October 5, 2024, the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, addressed a message on the occasion of World Education Day.

On World Education Day, which we celebrate today, we honor the essential role of all those who are part of the education process in guiding our young people along the path of knowledge and assuming the values on which a free, prosperous and strong society is built. Dedicating yourself to the training of entire generations is one of the most beautiful vocations. Let us, therefore, value those who open minds and build characters, being themselves role models for the students they educate. Happy birthday to all those who have chosen the teaching career!“, Klaus Iohannis said on this occasion.

On this occasion, the President of Romania signed several decrees for the decoration of some educational institutions, recognizing the contribution of teachers to the development of the country through education and their commitment to improving the educational act.

Among them is the high school that kept his post blocked for 27 years. President Klaus Iohannis awarded distinctions to the “Samuel von Brukenthal” National College in Sibiu, where his chair was blocked for 27 years, and to the “Gheorghe Lazăr” National College in Sibiu, where his wife, Carmen Iohannis, teaches.

The two high schools are among 101 schools awarded by the president on October 4, receiving the highest distinction, the Order of “Merit for Education“. The decree was published in the Official Gazette a day before World Education Day, celebrated on October 5.

Three other educational institutions decorated with the “Merit for Education” Order at the rank of Grand Officer are the “Ferdinand I” National College from Bacău, the “Liviu Rebreanu” National College from Bistrita and the “Silvania” National College from Zalău.

According to law 220 of 2004, the Order is awarded in four grades: Grand Officer, Officer, Commander and Knight.
