Long-term sacrificial government? Analyst: “After the presidential elections, it is expected that one of the parties will withdraw”

Political analysts Adrian Zăbava and Cristian Pîrvulescu are of the opinion that the future government will have a limited duration, with the possibility of a major change after the presidential elections, and economic difficulties and political negotiations will mark the first years of government.

Adrian Zăbava believes that the next government of Romania will have a short lifespan, given the complexity of the political and economic situation. Given the extremely complicated situation both politically and economically, it is hard to believe that the next government can be a long-lasting one“, states Zăbău. According to the analyst, the government will be a sacrificial government” or, at best, a short-term government.

Cristian Pîrvulescu, on the other hand, expresses a similar opinion, advancing the idea of a “service government“. I don’t think we will have a long-term government, I think it will be a service government. We will see what the composition is“, declares Pîrvulescu. He adds that, for a government to have a chance to survive in the medium and long term, it must include party leaders in its structure, a fact that guarantees cooperation between political formations.

As for the possible changes in the government after the election of a new president, Zăbău is skeptical about a significant change. Hard to say…it depends both on what the coalition will look like and on who the next president will be,” says the analyst. According to him, the president could only influence the government if it contradicted the new goals of the president. Theoretically, the new president can have a say, but it remains to be seen if the government will be against him or if it will be on the same wavelength as the future president“, says Zăbava.

Pîrvulescu, however, suggests that the presidential elections will bring important changes. After the presidential elections, it is expected that one of the parties will withdraw and there will be, therefore, another negotiation“, declares Pîrvulescu. He believes that, depending on the political direction of the new president, the government could undergo significant changes.

Next, Zăbău notes that the government will depend a lot on internal political developments and the stability of the coalition. Even if the future coalition partners will get along in the longer term, I think the reality will show that the next government will be more of a sacrificial one“, points out the analyst.

Pîrvulescu adds that the government’s difficulties will be evident in the next period. This government is going to have a lot of trouble in the coming weeks and months“, states Pîrvulescu. In this sense, the specialist cautiously analyzes the impact of the budget law on the stability of the government, arguing that the budget will be a crucial point, but not necessarily decisive for the duration of the government: What happens next depends on the budget law“, he adds.
