Joseph Lawrence, 25, of Las Vegas, had been vaping daily for years, which is why he was rushed to the hospital with a life-threatening injury.
The man was close to dangerously collapsing lungs, a condition in which air builds up between the lung and the chest wall.
He said on X: “If you vape, please consider quitting. I had a hole in my lung and had to be taken to the ER because I couldn't breathe. Fortunately, I'm fine now“.
“Please take care of yourselves and consider quitting, it's not worth it“, Lawrence relayed.
Experts are particularly concerned about the rise in e-cigarette use among children, with one in ten 11- to 15-year-olds using them regularly.
In the UK, at least two 15-year-old students have vaped at one time, according to the UK Health Service.
Research shows that e-cigarettes are significantly healthier than traditional cigarettes, and the NHS even recommends that people use them to help them quit smoking.
Lawrence said doctors suspected his lung injury was caused by his daily e-cigarette habit.
Dr Panagis Galiatsatos, from Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, told DailyMail.com, quoted by The Sun: “Inflammation will compromise the lungs. If you vape more and more, you will cause the walls of your lungs to lose their integrity, become more flexible, and then, in the right situation, this results in a rupture.“
