Before the PSD National Political Council meeting, Marcel Ciolacu declared during the morning of Friday, August 9, that “there will be a discussion” on his candidacy for the presidential elections.

Standing in front of the headquarters of the Social Democratic Party, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu was asked if he would notify his colleagues about his possible candidacy for the Cotroceni seat.
“It will be a discussion. It’s normal“, was the answer of the PSD president.
“We have entered the statutory area, today we are approving what are the conditions for registration, what are the conditions for the party, how we proceed with the motion for candidacies within the party. I will come with a team, naturally I also want changes in this team. That’s why we wanted to expand it with four more vice presidents per domain. Two rounds of elections have passed: local and European parliamentary. It is normal to take this into account“, said the prime minister.
Asked if it is possible to change the rules so that independent candidates can enter the internal race in the party, Ciolacu said: “There was a discussion inside. I had this discussion with my colleagues. We all left this gate open. Until this moment there has been no request of an independent candidate to run from the Social Democratic Party”.
We remind you that the president of the National Liberal Party, Nicolae Ciucă, announced in July that he will run for the presidential elections, but he must obtain the party’s approval, stating that he will go to the party’s branches to discuss his candidacy.
Elena Lasconi, the head of the USR, and George Simion, the leader of the AUR, also entered the race for the Cotroceni seat.
We remind you that Romanians go to the polls to elect their new president on November 24 (first round) and December 8 (second round, if necessary), in 2024.
