The famous actor and director Mel Gibson recently started in a pilgrimage to Mount Athos, known as the “holy mountain” of Orthodoxy, located in northern Greece. With a monastic tradition for over a thousand years, this represents a central point of Eastern Christian spirituality, attracting pilgrims from all over the world.
Currently, Mel Gibson is at the Hilandar Monastery, one of the 20 historical monasteries on the Athos Peninsula, founded by Serbian Holy Saints. The actor, appreciated by many Christians for the film “Passions of Christ”, decided to spend a few days in peace and prayer, far from everyday agitation, to focus on spiritual life.
“I have never felt such a deep connection with God as here,” he confessed to the experience lived at Mount Athos.

Mel Gibson has spoken over time about his faith and how the Bible influenced life and career. According to him, the events reported in Scripture represent fundamental truths, which he wanted to transpose on the big screen to inspire the public.
“Christianity is the only religion that can be mocked in the film industry”, said the Hollywood star, emphasizing the challenges he faces compared to other beliefs.
Mel Gibson also confessed that he grew up in a traditionalist Catholic family and that he still used to participate in Latin services in a private chapel from his home in California, thus keeping the connection with the values of his faith, notes J. Post.
The pilgrimage to Mount Athos comes to an important moment for the director Mel Gibson, who is to start filming for his new production, “The Resurrection of Christ” (“The Resurrection of Christ”), a continuation of the film “Passions of Christ”.
Actor Jim Caviezel will return to the main role, and the Romanian actress Maia Morgenstern will resume the role of the Virgin Mary in this future religious epic of Hollywood cinema.
