Mircea Geoană is convinced that the NATO summit in Washington, which he participated in as the Deputy Secretary General of NATO, will be the last in which he took part in this capacity, but not the last NATO summit in which he participates. He states that for “objective reasons” he cannot answer questions regarding his possible candidacy for the presidency of Romania.

“I can say one thing today, that I am more and more convinced of the fact that this summit was not my last summit and in this position, for sure, but in another position, quite possible. Therefore, I cannot give a complete answer. I think that’s a clear enough answer. But I am not allowed and I cannot, morally, ethically speaking, professionally speaking here, make an announcement as long as I am still at NATO, and I said this not to evade an answer, but because I have too much respect for the organization on that I serve and the professional ethics that I must have”said Mircea Geoană in an interview given in Washington to Antena 3 station, news.ro writes.
He said it seems to him”curious” the fact that the main parties in Romania have not announced a candidate for the supreme office in the state.
“If there is an objective and not subjective explanation for me, I think there is a slightly deeper question, which is the reason why on the brink of the presidential elections, almost… I have an answer and I don’t want it to seem anything other than the situation the fact that in one part there is probably a calculation of major political risk that no one wants to take and someone would like to assume it, but does not have the necessary votes. It is a completely new situation for our fragile democracy, weakened, many times, both from the outside and from the inside”said the former PSD president.
Geoana emphasized that “must be resolved” his succession to the leadership of NATO, after it was decided who will replace the current Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg.
