The last death, the 18th, was reported in Bucharest. It is a 10-month-old child, unvaccinated, who had contact with his 13-year-old sister, also unvaccinated, diagnosed with measles virus infection.
The most confirmed cases were registered in Brașov (2074), followed by Mureș (1216), Argeș (1043), Prahova (1095) and Bucharest (1638).
Between December 6, 2023 and June 9, 2024, 169,312 doses of MMR vaccine were used, of which 27,686 doses were given to children aged 9 to 11 months, according to data extracted from the National Electronic Vaccination Registry.
Health authorities are urging parents to vaccinate their children to prevent the spread of measles, a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease. Information and vaccination campaigns continue, aiming to reduce the number of cases and protect public health.
The MMR vaccine protects the child from three diseases; measles, mumps and rubella. The little one should receive the first dose of the vaccine when he turns one year old, and the second one at five years old. Immunization by vaccine eliminates the risk of severe forms of the disease, complications or death.
“The vaccine is issued free of charge to children up to 18 years of age, as part of the national vaccination scheme“, previously stated Dr. Gindrovel Dumitra, coordinator of the vaccinology group within the National Society of Family Medicine.
Measles is a highly contagious disease that spreads through the air and can have serious or even fatal consequences, especially for young children and the unvaccinated. Common symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a distinctive rash characterized by red spots.
