Netflix, accused of eliminating a biblical verse from the film “Passions of Christ”. What significance does “Isaiah 53” have and why it is not read in the synagogues

More Netflix users have noticed that a sequence in the movie “The passions of Christ” (2004), directed by Mel Gibson, would have been modified. Specifically, this is the disappearance of a famous verse in Isaiah 53, known in the Old Testament “The chapter forbidden ” by some Jewish researchers.

In the original version launched in theaters, the film begins with the quote: “He had been pierced for our sins and crushed for our transgressions. He was punished for our salvation and through His wounds we all healed.” – Isaiah 53.

However, in the records distributed on social networks and which seem to come from the version available on Netflix, this passage is replaced by a 13 -second black screen, without sound and without context, reports Christian Post.

Currently, it is not clear whether the change is related to the user’s location or if it is specific to the Netflix platform. The company representatives have not yet offered an official response.

Isaiah 53, also known as the passage “The suffering servant”, a prophecy about the death of Jesus on the cross is considered by Christian theologians. Pastor and publisher Dan Delzell claims that this chapter is no longer read in the Jewish synagogues for decades, being considered controversial.

Delzell refers to the 17th-century Jewish historian Raphael Levi, who would have recognized that the rabbis decided to eliminate Isaiah 53 from public readings because of “Confusion and disputes” which they generate. Thus, within the weekly readings in the synagogues, it is jumping from Isaiah 52 directly to Isaiah 54.

A journalist from the Christian Post has personally checked the version on Netflix and reported that the verse was present, which supplies the suspicion that there could be several variants of the film available according to the country where the user is.

This is not the first time Netflix is criticized for how it treats religious themes. In 2019, the platform was at the center of a scandal because of a Brazilian comedy film that presented Jesus as homosexual.

Also in 2020 the series “Messiah” He aroused negative reactions from some Christians, and in 2023, a Christmas animation was criticized for a scene in which the children staged the birth of Jesus on Madonna rhythms – an artist who publicly supported abortion.
